Gynecomastia/ Male Breast Enlargement

Gynecomastia refers to the excessive growth of breast tissue in men as a result of the imbalance of estrogen and testosterone hormones, drug use or any disease. This can occur on one side, or in both breasts. Gynecomastia in men usually occurs in newborns, during adolescence and in advanced ages. Generally, gynecomastia is not a very serious condition, and is easily eliminated. Nonetheless, in case of excessive growth, pain may develop in the breasts. Moreover, in such cases, individuals may feel uncomfortable due to their appearance. Gynecomastia can develop due to hormonal changes, genes, obesity, use of medications and environmental factors. Almost half of men in the world experience gynecomastia at some point in their lives. Gynecomastia sometimes disappears in newborns and adolescents.

What Is Gynecomastia? How Is It Performed?

This procedure, also known as male breast enlargement, can be performed under general anesthesia. In cases where there is excessive amount of fat tissue, the excess fat can be removed from the body only with liposuction. Nonetheless, liposuction does not work in cases where there is a lot of sagging, or the breast tissue or skin area needs to be removed. If necessary, the nipple and areola can be turned back to their natural position in this procedure. In cases of advanced sagging, the desired image can be obtained by performing the procedure and liposuction together. The duration of the gynecomastia procedure varies depending on the technique to be used, and whether the procedure is performed on one breast or both breasts. Patients should be maintained under control at the hospital for 1 night after this procedure.

Who Can Have Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is considered as a last resort. It is preferred in cases where there is no response to drug treatment. Only in cases caused by obesity, patients are expected to lose weight first. However, when this does not occur, gynecomastia is considered as an option. However, the discomfort of the appearance or the pain of the patient due to gynecomastia also indicates the necessity of the procedure. At this point, the important thing is that the physical development must have been completed. Gynecomastia that occurs in infancy or at the age of development disappears spontaneously over time. However, this operation offers a solution for individuals, who still need gynecomastia despite completing their adolescence. Although the effects of gynecomastia are permanent, gynecomastia may occur again in individuals due to various reasons such as excessive weight gain and hormone therapy after the procedure.

Planning Process Before Gynecomastia

The planning process before the procedure is extremely important. At this point, the surgeon decides on the most appropriate technique that meets the needs of the patient. In order for the recovery process to be more comfortable and shorter, patients should discontinue smoking and alcohol consumption at least 2 weeks before the procedure. Drugs that may increase bleeding during surgery are also taken with the recommendation of the surgeon, or the use of these drugs is suspended. At the end of the planning process, the patient is informed about the appearance of his body after the procedure. Photographs are taken during the planning process in order to follow the developments before and after the procedure. Since the procedure is performed under general anesthesia, patients must stay in the hospital for 1 day after the procedure.

Recovery Process After Gynecomastia

There is a noticeable difference immediately after the procedure. However, elastic bandages are used to protect and support the area, and minimize swelling. In some cases, drains are placed in the area of procedure to prevent fluid or blood accumulation. These drains are removed by the physician a few days later. Patients should not move much after the operation, and should not force the area. Redness or swelling disappears spontaneously within about 1 week. Patients, who do not work with excessive physical intensity, can return to work within a few weeks.
